Co-founders Monica Hanna and Dr. Markeith Royster met in August 2016 while working at UCLA Residential Life. Monica and Markeith found themselves having lots of conversations about their own experiences as first-generation professionals and their fears of “being found out” because this wasn’t supposed to be their story.
Monica and Markeith found themselves speaking with many highly capable and high achieving students who struggled with the same feelings of being an impostor. In September 2017, Monica and Markeith presented their first workshop titled “From Impossible to I’M Possible: An Analysis of the Impostor Phenomenon”. The workshop received raving reviews and became highly requested across the UCLA campus.
Since then, Monica and Markeith have presented the workshop in various professional and student spaces, including the IGNITE Women’s Leadership Conference, First-Gen Professionals, and UCLA Residential Life’s student staff training.
In January 2019, Monica and Markeith expanded the workshop into a UCLA Fiat Lux course, which they now teach annually. The class allowed for a deeper delve into the topic and for true community to develop between participants.
Having seen the impact of this work, Mint Lemonade was established with the goal of reaching a greater audience. Mint Lemonade was founded in Los Angeles, CA in January 2021 with a goal to equip students, professionals, and BIPOC folx with tools to reach their greatest potential.
